By flattening the tree, you can see all changed files in one look (in the selected dir and its subdirs), and select them one by one easily (or select only part of them if some of your files are not ready for commit). Hence you don't have to browse through every directory to see changed files. However, if you don't want to manually select which files you want to commit, you can as well select the parent directory and click commit, which will commit any change in the directory and its subdirs.
